Can you get high off hemp? – 2016-11-14
The short answer is no. Hemp is not used to get high like marijuana.
This is a misconception many people have about hemp due to its lineage. It’s often times assumed because hemp grows from the same species of plant, that smoking it would get you high. This is incorrect. Though both hemp and marijuana come from the plant Cannabis Sativa, hemp plant has a very low rate of THC. Think of it as a family member you are similar to in many ways, but have obvious differences.
The difference maker is the levels of THC:CBD (both chemicals found in marijuana). Marijuana is high in THC and therefor creates the cerebral high that can bring on bouts of euphoria. The CBD level counter-acts the THC levels. This is important to note for what I am about to tell you.
Hemp is notably VERY low in THC, and high in CBD. Which means an extraction would only contain the chemical CBD, which is non-psychoactive and has a long resume of health benefits. Including helping with anxiety, depression, adhd, cancer treatment, etc. The list goes on. I would like to refer you to ProjectCBD for more information related to this helpful chemical. Just to note, there are many benefits associated with THC as well and synergize well for those exact symptoms. CBD will bring on no euphoria, no high.
Hemp plants do not have resin glands and mature buds that are required to get THC which is necessary in getting one high. The lowest percentage of THC in cannabis is typically 3-5%, hemp has 1/5th of that. Getting high from it would be as difficult as getting drunk off of non-alcoholic beer. And to get an idea at how low that level actually is, modern day marijuana strains can be grown in the 25%+ range.
