A trend that I have noticed in the last four years of selling necklaces is that amethyst is in. In this article we discuss a little background on the amethyst crystal and talk in depth about our best selling amethyst necklace.
Amethyst is a violet quartz that when translated into Greek means “intoxicated” because of the ancient belief that it “promotes sobriety and and protected the stones owner of drunkenness.”
The stones with the most visible “purplish reddish” colors are considered the “finest amethyst stones.” by purist and collectors.
In the four years that we have been open, our “amethyst crystal necklace” listing on Etsy (and now here) has been the most viewed and purchased necklace. A crystal that was once only available to royalty is now more affordable than ever.
Amethyst is a well known mineral and gemstone. It is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and its most valuable and prized variety. Its name derives from the Greek “amethystos”, which means “not drunken”, as Amethyst in antiquity was thought to ward off drunkenness. The color of some Amethyst specimens from certain localities slowly fade upon prolonged exposure to light. When used as a gemstone, Amethyst is often heat treated to deepen the color, or to transform it into Citrine. Some varieties may also change to a light green color, which is given the trade name “Prasiolite”, or “Green Amethyst”, as it is more commonly known in the gem trade.
The amethyst crystal which is so highly revered as a majestic being was once considered as the “jewels of the gods” which is a high appraisal for the stone. As the official gemstone of Ontario, amethyst has long been used for an assortment of beliefs about the powers the stones brought.
Farmers once believed that amethyst kept their crops safe from hail storms and other potential drought. Bishops wore amethyst rings for good luck. It’s commonly stated that “Amethyst has been used to symbolize deep love, happiness, humility, sincerity and wealth.”1
Another interesting fact I discovered when researching facts about amethyst crystals is that Leonardo da Vinci believed “amethyst had the power to control evil thoughts, to quicken intelligence, and to make men shrewd in business matters.”2
